Bridging the gap: Matthijs on the role of Business System Analyst in banking

In the fast-paced banking sector, effective communication between departments is very important. Matthijs, a Business System Analyst at Knab., has firsthand experience with this challenge. With a background in Business Engineering and Management, he has a unique perspective on how to connect the often-misunderstood worlds of business and IT.

Launching his career with Risketeers

Matthijs joined Risketeers as his first job out of university, where he was eager to embrace new challenges. “I completed my bachelor’s degree and felt ready to start working,” he shares. His journey began when he discovered Risketeers through a mutual connection, leading to an interview.

During his training at Risketeers, Matthijs found the experience very valuable. “I really liked the training we got before starting at our bank. It helped with getting some background information about banking,” he recalls. This foundation allowed him to hit the ground running when he transitioned into his position at Knab.

The role of a Business System Analyst

“Business needs IT to move forward, but IT also requires input from the business side to determine what is valuable,” Matthijs explains. This makes Business System Analysts essential in fostering collaboration and understanding  among teams. His role is essential in translating technical jargon into practical insights for business stakeholders, making sure that all parties understand each other.

As Matthijs navigates his role, he has learned the significance of being proactive in this collaborative environment. He emphasizes the importance of open communication, especially when working with diverse teams. “By understanding both sides, you can link the two together,” he highlights. This skill is especially important in settings  where miscommunication can lead to delays and inefficiencies.

Looking forward, Matthijs sees a promising future for Business System Analysts. “There is quite some miscommunication between Business and IT, and by understanding both, you can make yourself a valuable team member,” he asserts. His thoughts highlight the evolving nature of the Business System Analyst role.

Personal and professional growth

Matthijs also reflects on the personal growth he has experienced in his role. Initially, he faced challenges in expressing his opinions and contributing to discussions. “When I just started at the bank, I felt a bit more insecure to really give my opinion and to challenge colleagues,” he admits. Over time, he realized that sharing his thoughts was crucial and that speaking his mind is something that is both valued and appreciated by others.

Moreover, Matthijs considers his success as a Risketeer to be tied to the opportunities presented to him during his traineeship. “I got an assignment at a great bank that also decided to offer me a contract after the traineeship,” he explains. This achievement not only marks a significant milestone in his career but also illustrates the effectiveness of the Risketeers program in preparing young professionals for real-world challenges.

In conclusion, Matthijs truly embodies the essential function of Business System Analysts in the banking sector. By fostering open communication and maintaining a proactive approach, he plays a key role in

strengthening interdepartmental teamwork and promoting corporate achievements. As the financial industry keeps changing, individuals like Matthijs are sure to be instrumental in spearheading innovation and achieving success for their organizations.
